Football for Hope, Peace and Unity - 5-A-Side Football Tournament London Play2Remember – 1st April 2017

01 Mar 2017

London Play2Remember is an annual 5-a-side football tournament with a social goal: promoting reconciliation and togetherness through sport.

Established in 2014 by Football for Hope, Peace and Unity (FHPU), PSMG’s chosen Charity, and in collaboration with several community outreach groups, London Play2Remember provides a chance for survivors of genocide and mass atrocities, as well as their supporters, to get together in a spirit of commemoration and hope.

London Play2Remember takes place on the first weekend of April to coincide with the international day of remembrance for the 1994 genocide in Rwanda on 7 April and the United Nations International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) on 6 April.

The event is open to men, women and mixed teams.

Please join as a team or individual player (you will be allocated to a team) to play on the day, or as a spectator to watch the fun and support our cause. The event is not for profit, any proceeds will be used to cover running costs or will be donated to the organisers to fund our work with vulnerable survivor, migrant, and refugee groups.

In 2017, on Saturday April 1st, Waging Peace, an NGO that campaigns against human rights abuses in Sudan and supports its asylum-seeking communities, is for the second year teaming up with FHPU to bring together groups who have suffered atrocities, but also to highlight the current suffering of millions of refugees fleeing global conflict. We believe that to move beyond 'never again', we must look forward to ensure that our actions today contribute to preventing others suffering in future. Our goal is to encourage affected communities to integrate and to become active citizens fighting prejudice, intolerance and hatred, using sports, and football in particular, as a tool. For people in the midst of suffering, this hope is instrumental for moving forward.
